Microsoft Removes Third-Party SnapChat Apps from Windows Phone Store

The unofficial SnapChat apps have been removed from the Windows Phone Store. They do not appear at the Store for users to download or update them. These third-party apps for SnapChat have disappeared leaving users without access to the popular messaging app. Despite the increasing popularity of Windows Phone global market, there is no official SnapChat app for the Windows Phone users.

Most Windows Phone users used third-party applications such as 6Snap, Snaptastic and more. 6Snap by Rudy Huyn is one of the popular SnapChat clients for Windows Phone users. Rudy confirmed on Twitter that his app and all other third-party SnapChat apps previously available for Windows Phone have been removed.

Over the last few weeks, SnapChat has been contacting users of third-party apps to warm them their accounts may get locked. In a blog post, SnapChat said,” We’ve enjoyed some of the ways that developers have tried to make Snapchat better. Unfortunately, some developers build services that trick Snapchatters and compromise their accounts.”

The step has been taken after a hack on SnapSaved in October that leaked private Snapchat images online. After that, SnapChat decided to crack down unofficial third-party SnapChat apps. SnapChat addressed the issue of third-party software stressing the need of user security in its blog post as well. According to SnapChat, ”When you give your login credentials to a third-party application, you’re allowing a developer, and possibly a criminal, to access your account information and send information on your behalf.”

However, this ban on third party apps for SnapChat may not last for too long. SnapChat will soon release an official API to allow third parties to connect to its service. This will result in increased protection for user privacy and security.

So, for now, you will not be able to download 6Snap or other third-party SnapChat apps from the Windows Phone Store. Subscribe to our RSS feeds and stay updated on the story.
