Samsung today announced that its new Gear S2 smartwatch will be available for purchase in US. Starting this Friday, October 2, the Gear S2 will go on sale. The smartwatch comes in two models: the standard model priced at $299.99 and the slightly more sophisticated classic model at $349.99. The Classic sports a classier look with a black leather strap and a bit more detail around rotating bezel.
To recall, Samsung Gear S2 features a stainless steel round case design that looks like the traditional analog watches. It supports Samsung Pay mobile payment system which uses NFC for in-store purchases. It is compatible with Android Smartphones but does not use Android Wear as its operating system. It runs on Samsung’s own Tizen OS.
In a press release, CEO JK Shin, praised the S2’s design and said, “For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearables category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market. The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout — and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun.”
Gear S2 will be available for purchase at select retailers including Samsung.com, Amazon.com, Best Buy and Macy’s. Users can also enjoy hands-on time with Gear S2 at the Herald Square Macy’s in New Store. Additionally, 50 more Macy’s stores across the US will have demos available, starting from October 16. The cellular network connected models will also be available later this fall through AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
As the pricing is in line with Moto 360 and is lower than Apple Watch, Gear S2 is an attractive option in the ever-expanding smartwatch market.
