About Bluetooth 5

The next version of Bluetooth called Bluetooth 5 is all set to launch on June 16. Mark Powell, Bluetooth Special Interest Group, announced that the fifth-generation of Bluetooth is coming soon. It is supposed to offer an extended range and faster transfer rates as compared to its predecessors with up to two times the range and four times the transfer speeds. This is quite a significant improvement in the performance over the currently available version. It will allow a great and fast way to transfer large files wirelessly.

Mark Powell, said in an email, “I’m pleased to tell you that on 16 June, we will formally announce that the next version of Bluetooth will be marketed as Bluetooth 5. Veterans of the SIG will note that with this name we have dropped reference to both the version and point number in our marketing messaging. Our new naming approach is focused on simplifying our marketing, communicating user benefits more effectively and making it easier to signal significant technology updates to the market.”

More Location Information

Bluetooth version 5 is also going to have extra navigational features. “By adding significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions, Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world,” said Powell.

Advertising

Currently, the advertising packets are 47 bytes in size and of these 31 are available for data. Bluetooth version 5 is expected to have larger sized packets to enable more information to be shared among Bluetooth devices. It will also help users to identify, and connect to other devices that support Bluetooth.

Internet of Things

The IoT buzz is all around and the Bluetooth 5 will include various tweaks to provide better performance and optimizations.

New Hardware

With Bluetooth 5, we also expect new hardware to come in to support the latest standard.
