Microsoft Word features various text formatting options and one of the useful among them is hyphenation. There are certain situations when hyphenation might be beneficial. When creating documents that contain multiple columns, hyphenation is needed at other times also. Today, we explain the steps to enable hyphenation in Word.

Hyphens are especially useful when you are working with columns such as tables or newsletter; you want to have a narrow band of text running down the page. Right justification does not work out as it will enhance space among the words. Here, the automatic or manual hyphenation perfectly fits in.

There are different ways to apply hyphenation and you may need to experiment with the features until you achieve the desired result. You can choose to apply hyphenation either automatically or manually. This setting can be saved along with the document and is valid for that document only. New documents will continue with the default hyphenation setting, which is no hyphenation.

To enable hyphenation in Word, follow these steps:

  • You should make sure that no text is selected.
  • On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click on Hyphenation.
  • Enable Hyphenation in Word

  • You can choose automatic hyphenation in Hyphenation dialog box. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Hyphenation and select Hyphenation Options. For automatic hyphenation, select Automatically hyphenate document check box.
  • Enable Hyphenation in Word

  • When you don’t want hyphenate words in uppercase, leave Hyphenate Words in CAPS.

When you want to hyphenate words in uppercase. If you don’t want, untick this box.

Enable Hyphenation in Word

Hyphenation Zone:

This is the maximum space allowed a word and right hand margin. When you increase this number, the hyphenation zone becomes wider. In case, lower number is chosen, it will give you more hyphens.

Limit consecutive hyphens to:

It allows you to prevent Word from hyphenating at the end of every line.

Manual:

This gives you another way to get to the Manual Hyphenation feature.
