SEO Best Practices and Guidelines

Here are a lit of simple but effective SEO guidelines which will help you get your web pages seen by most search engines thereby generating traffic to your web pages. Web traffic is the key to a successful website.

Content Length:

  • Keep content elements like paragraphs, lists etc. under 50 words.
  • First sentence should be the most important part of the content.
  • Do not loose focus from the subject of the content.
  • Keep sentences short, simple and to the point.
  • Break content into lists or images which helps reader to find what they are looking for easier.

Readable Links:

  • Use words that will clarify where the users will be directed on click.
  • Use a meaningful and readable description than a url.
  • Avoid make text like “Go” or “Read More” clickable links.

Title and Meta tags:

  • Each page should have unique Title, Meta Keywords and Description tag.
  • Title tags should not be more than 65 characters (including spaces). with relevant keywords appearing in the beginning of the title.
  • Title tags should include one or two relevant keywords.
  • Create title tags with multiple keyword possibilities.
  • Include 2 – 3 keywords in Meta Description and place them within the first 155 characters.
  • No more than 15 keywords should be used per Meta Keyword tag.
  • Include synonyms and common typos in the Meta keyword tag.
  • Use targeted keywords based on your niche.

Web Content:

  • Select 2-3 keywords that are relevant to your page content.
  • Use keywords sparingly in content, but place them within vital content areas like body, navigation menu, links etc.
  • It is better to start the content with a keyword phrase and end with a keyword towards the end of the content.
  • On a given page do not use more than 2 different keyword instances per 100 words and no more than 15 keyword instances total for the entire page.
  • Always use alt tags for all images used on the page with 1-2 keywords per image.
  • Main Heading should contain keywords and should wrapped inside H1 tag.
  • Always use H2 with subheads and may contain keywords.
